Community Announcements

Rainier Beach High and other schools are hoping to raise $25,000 by May 1 to make sure that the summer social-justice program, Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools, can be held this summer. Read more about it or if you would like to donate or further information, follow this link.

The Get Engaged program is an innovative program from the City of Seattle and the Accelerator YMCA. They play emerging leaders 18-29 on 18 different public Boards and Commissions each year and support their development of leadership competencies. Applications are open now. Two more information sessions in May.

RFP Opportunity: King County Elections and Seattle Foundation will fund up to $25,000 in 2016 Voter Engagement with Chinese, Korean, Latino and Vietnamese communities (Sec203 Voting Rights Act & KC Ordinance languages). Smaller Tier 2 Funds for other KC top-tier languages will be made available this summer.

Mayor’s Education Summit has changed venues. It will now be at Garfield High School (The Commons) at 400 23rd Ave, Seattle, WA 98122 just next door to the original location.

Mayor’s Education Summit *Note Location Change*

What: You are invited to the Mayor’s Education Summit to hear a summary of the top ideas and suggestions gathered during the two-month-long community conversation process. The Mayor and education experts will present actions the City can take to reduce the education disparities among our children and close the achievement gap so all kids can succeed in school.

Neighbor to Neighbor Community Meetings in Partnership with the African-American Male Scholars Think Tank

What: The African-American Male Scholars Initiative (AAMSI) has a focus on the evolution of the district’s teaching, leadership and organizational practices with regard to the success of African-American males. It is our belief through this initiative and the recommendations outlined for change, Seattle Public Schools will become a district that believes and supports the idea that all African-American males are successful. That Seattle Public schools remain committed to this initiative for the success of African-American males and that it remain consistent regardless of changes in district leadership.
